We can sympathise with the Israeli populace whilst disapproving of their government.
If you look at the Israeli media (I subscribe to Ha'aretz) there are enough first hand narratives which contradicts the propaganda to paint a rather different picture. "The first casualty of war is the truth". The similarity with the WW1 propaganda is striking.
It looks as if most of the Israeli casualties were the product of Israeli tanks and helicopters; and the objective of most of the militants was to get hostages to do a prisoner exchange. Hostages report sympathetic handling.
It also seems likely that the ultimate reason for the attempt was to remove at least the Northern end (probably all) of Gaza, for the new Red sea canal. Israel will then be the confluence of the new silk road to China, and the major sea route; it will have the only port on that coast, and purloin Gaza's oil field.
