There is an awful lot of cowardly evil emanating from our disgusting government and disgraceful judiciary, police and prison officers seem to be close behind. I hope millions wish the best for Stuart who, having survived this dystopian nightmare, will be stronger than ever before.

Stuart Burns is absolutely correct. We have a two tier justice system which discriminates against normal indigenous people. The Govt, the police and the judiciary want to destroy our morale so that we never dare make any dissenting comment about their crooked ways. When speech is criminalised, violence will inevitably follow. I think we should all be looking at self-defence classes so that the thugs who run this country will get a dose of their own medicine in due course. This is the lull before the storm. Does this count as a public space? Will I get a jail sentence for saying what most people think?

Thanks for covering this. My nephew, 18 at the time, was similarly treated after getting caught up in the protests in Middlesbrough. He was initially charged with violent disorder and possession of a weapon. The latter charge immediately dismissed as it was nonsense. The solicitors were very obviously inept and working with the police with all recommending guilty please in order to gain lighter sentences - my nephew was threatened with 3 years - which never eventuated, bail was refused unless you were one of the Pakistanis who actually started the trouble, marauding through Middlesbrough in a mob chanting allahu akhbar…

He served 9 months in Durham during which he and his family were extorted out of thousands of pounds by criminal rings in the prison working with family on the outside to threaten him and extract money from his mother. The police and prison service took no action. The UK is a disgrace, the ‘Prime Minister’ is a disgrace, the police and judiciary are an embarrassment.

Please continue to highlight this issue. The Government needs to go, the police and judiciary need to be brought to heel for their bias and complicity, and the country restored.

We are ruled by the criminal classes - Govt, police , judiciary, lawyers. Our legal system keeps them safely in power. So much of it has to go. I doubt that this country can survive even two more years of this, let alone four.

Jesus wept! How sickening. What an appalling story. Mr Burns believed, like the rest of the population, that he lived in a free democracy where he was sovereign over himself and where he could say pretty much anything short of suggesting murdering someone. He believed his government was there to serve the people, that the judiciary was impartial and non-political and that the police were being used by bad characters who had infiltrated the govt to further their own ends. Which is what most of us believe, to varying degrees. He said nothing wrong and he hurt absolutely nobody. Appalling and really scary.

Thank you for covering this topic, great article.

Who wakes up one day and thinks "I'd really like to support someone in prison, it sounds a right hoot" NO ONE, that's who ...

My organisation has supported hundreds of loved ones who reached out to Unseen Victims in the aftermath of the civil unrest last year, and continue to do so today. The problems identified don't solely affect the person jailed. Imagine the frustrations, fear, isolation and crippling burdens placed on those left behind to pick up the pieces, literally overnight in most cases?

Imagine dragging a terrified toddler from a visit hall, screaming for her daddy. Finding an average of £300 every month simply to keep in touch and maintain the strong family bonds that are apparently instrumental in reducing future offending. No trips to the park, no holidays, stretching the families weekly food budget to afford as little an 1 hour in the confines of a hostile and cold prison visit hall. Spending a full weekend travelling hundreds of miles with little ones and staying in unfamiliar towns, surrounded by strangers.

Imagine sitting around a table for Christmas dinner with daddy missing, the questions, the tears and the confusion. The missed birthdays, weddings, graduations, anniversaries and milestones,

Time doesn't pause - it continues, painfully ...

Think for a second about the time of release? Who is this person returning to our family? Have they changed, will they find work? How will we manage the negativity in the community and backlash that is often directed towards returning citizens and their families.

Spend a few seconds pondering just how easy it is to find yourself in these situations? Neither of these individuals acted with premeditated intent, there was an agreed (or not) assumption that the words expressed could lead to further criminality and potential harm, even death. Whether they should have been jailed, or not, is a matter for contention. Did their families deserve the enormous financial and emotional burdens placed on them - ABSOLUTLEY NOT.

I've lost count of the number of comments "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time" that I've witnessed, the ignorance behind this sentiment is staggering. A loved one can be arrested, charged and jailed at ANY TIME, for ANY REASON and no one should lose sight of the prospect of this happening to their family. If it does www.unseenvictims.org.uk will be there to support them without judgement at every step of these painful journeys ❤️

Exactly this, I was sent to jail after a political activist perverted the course of justice to have me arrested, I hadn't done anything wrong and my wife and kids certainly hadn't but they were the ones that bore the brunt of it the immediate financial strain that was placed on them was wholly unacceptable the weekly income of my household was reduced by 100%, the monthly income of the household was reduced by 80%. Then as you mention missed milestones, I will never get the opportunity back to sit and talk to my son in person after his 1st day at college, after his 1st week at college how's he finding it with the trade he's chosen to learn, instead it was reduced to a short phone call, not really the same

This deserves to be read widely. It details shocking inequalities in the way the justice system works. I nearly stopped reading very early on when I came to the phrase "insidious child-murder spree", because "insidious" seems a word that doesn't do justice to the horror of the crime and so I almost lost faith in the writer - maybe change to "horrific" or "appalling"? I hate the word "spree" with its implication of pleasure too and would change to "rampage" in order not to alienate readers early on. Brilliant, extremely alarming piece

He should have contacted the Free Speech Union - they have taken up many such cases and helped overturn convictions and obtain compensation.

Hi David I have on 2 occasions, they've never spoke with me in detail about it, they've just googled my name and read I was jailed for encouraging others to attack the police, they aren't interested so would appear the FSU is a contradiction of its self

"When a reported trans-activist with links to the Labour Party, who, for some reason, was surveilling right wing forums, had seen Stuart’s posts, she swiftly took screenshots and reported him to Cumbria Police."

Because that's what they do : Patrol forums and attempt to get people banned or arrested.

Thought I’d have a look at your ‘part-time citizen journalism’ for a laugh; I’m not disappointed.

Do you think Burns would commit the same offences again or is he, like all those slop bucket c*nts who get sent down, a cowed Cauc who now knows his place?

Thank you for the comments of support, it really does mean the world to me and it's helping me in my drive to clear my name, next week I have a meeting with the police and crime commissioner for my area to discuss why Cumbria police are choosing to ignore the crimes of the political activist who reported me. I have the evidence in my possession which proves the activist went to the police with the intent of perverting the course of justice. I believe he has to take me seriously as if he wants to retain his job he is going to have to stand for the position of Cumbria mayor as they will be taking over the the pfcc duties and any bad publicity won't help him achieve that goal
